When people hear about grooming a dog, all that comes to their mind is brushing the dog’s fur. Regular brushing not only removes dirt, prevents tangles and spreads the natural oils throughout its fur, it also keeps the animal skin free of any irritations. Brushing of the fur should be done a few times every week and in some cases even daily especially if the dog enjoys it. If done often, it becomes very easy to maintain the fur.

Apart from brushing the fur, other types of grooming for the dog include:

• Bathing

• Trimming of the nails

• Cleaning ears

• Removing any tangles on the fur

• Cleaning the eyes

A dog should be washed at least once every month but if it plays a lot in the dirt, it scan be washed every week. Some dogs do not like the touch of water and they must be forced when they need to be cleaned.

When a dog washed, it is the best time to trim the nails as they are softer and more visible. One should not cut them completely to the end as they might cause a cut on the skin and this can lead to bleeding and a wound.

The ears should also be checked and cleaned off any dirt and one should also check if there is any injury or dirt that was not removed with the cleaning. The dirt should be removed with a cotton wool swab and warm water. Dogs with long ears tend to have more dirt inside and these should be cleaned more often because if not, the dirt can cause serious infections.

The mouth should also be checked for any odor or blemished gum. The teeth should be washed with a small soft toothbrush and pet toothpaste at least twice a week. For the same reason as those of human beings, teeth are washed to remove the accumulation of food particles and residues. Human toothpaste should not be used as it is harmful to the dog. The dog toothpaste comes in beef favors and other flavors that entice the dogs. When put in the mouth, the dogs tend to like the taste and end up staying calm when it is being cleaned.

Dogs do not like the grooming process apart from brushing the fur. They do not like contact with water and so this needs to be done with enough caution and the dog needs to be make to stay calm.
